Thanks for the great review - do you know if the Swann NVR system will work with any other brands of NVR PTZ cameras such as Amcrest, Onwote, JiTech or others that have a more powerful zoom such as 12x-25x optical zoom and also 2-way audio?

I wasted 6 hours yesterday trying to get my Swann 4K DVR system to work. I talked with 5 different tech people and each time I had to start from the beginning to explain what was happening. What's funny is I could hook up the DVR to my son's cheap 19" TV and get a great picture. One tech had me change something that made it impossible to navigate as the admin. The sun went down and the cameras switched to night vision so we couldn't finish. I'm rethinking Swann seriously.

I have this system but have found at night if anyone walks quick they kind of disappear, also face recognition won't pick up if the camera is 20ft above on the apex, image quality is good zoom not the best I've seen and the recording at 15fps is kind of poor imo... line detection is annoying with false alerts even the spiders were setting off I watched them one night spinning their webs and setting it off...

False notifications really get me. I won't be buying this. I have a battery Ring spotlight at the front and that's gives so many false notifications even on lowest. Sometimes the Ring misses people but gets leaves. Not having much luck. Thanks, your videos are great.

Sorry to hear that.. I did text Swann and Reolink 4k and both did have the blown out glare because of the reflection of the IR on the license plates. However, I did a video of the Reolink 4MP 2 years ago and their adjustable varifocal camera was able to capture license plates even at night.

Really like your informative videos. Thusfar, can you still recommend the Reolink system insofar as user interface, clarity, reliability, etc over the Swann 4k or can you comment on the Reolink 4k system yet under same criteria? In other words - to purchase a system with forward looking technology, does the 4 or 5 MP system hold it's own against the 4k, or is k4 wave of future for all? ThAnKs

Not impressed at all . Loads of options that simply don't work . The cameras can't pick a clear face at 10m or 30 feet and the app is junk. I'm yet to find a good home camera system with out spending 4 or 5k This system's $1300 in Australia.

Hmmm, I just purchased the Swann DVR-5580 system (4x 4K true detect bullet cams + 2x 4K true detect dome cams + 2TB NVR) and this has me wondering whether I should keep it or return to for a refund (the packaging is still sealed). The PIR false detections during warmer weather is an issue for me as I live in Australia, where it's always hot as balls, even when it's cold! Hi Lifeahckter. I am actively looking for a security camera system for my house. Thanks a lot for all your review videos on products which are very very helpful in my decision making process. I was hoping that the swan 4k would be the best but since the motion alerts are not reliable, I am considering other options... With all your experiences on all different camera systems, if you had to buy one security camera system with motion system and siren with let say 4 cameras and potential to have POE wired camera, for which system would you go to? most reliable in 2019 you would say? Thanks in advance for your help. Other people's opinion are also more than welcome :) thanks

There is no one system right now that are good on all the features. For video quality, wired NVR systems are the best but they are not good in motion detection. Ring cameras are good in providing accurate motion detection and notification but video quality is only so so... but these 2 systems in conjunction should work pretty good.

ElroyMcDuff

I'm in the same boat. I just started installing a Reolink NVR system and the video quality is really good. The only drawback so far as you mentioned is the alerts. It is SUPER sensitive to changes in light and leaves swaying so you'll be bombarded with alerts depending on your location. You can set up really detailed motion alert zones and change the sensitivity based on time, which would be pretty neat if it actually helped. =P You might be ok if you don't have a lot of dappled shade or leaves in your field of view.

Il y a 7 mois
Ray Sussex

I wanted to believe that True Detect would be a good idea for outside use, but it sounds like he's finding too many false alerts. The PIR detection area is wider than the field of view and can't be edited, so trees and other things moving around are still going to trigger the alarms. Thinking about a semi-rural situation I just wish it would be as good as the makers claim!

Il y a 8 mois
Peter Zanetti

It is strange...I almost have a hard time believing that it can be as bad as a typical battery powered ring doorbell, when they claim all of these advanced features. Something doesn't add up. I doubt Swann would go to such lengths to build such features for them to not work at all.

Hi LifeHackster, thank you for your great reviews. I'm based in UK and looking to buy my first POE security camera system, and like many people, I'm stuck between the Swann SWNVK-885804 or the Reolink RLK8-800b4. My main requirement is that it must be 4K and have a good app and desktop software. I understand you are reviewing Unifi next and not Reolink, and I know you' ve already done a Reolink 4MP review last year already. So I just want to get your opinion and everyone else on here, which is better? I know the Swann one has thermal detection, and that it supports uploading still images to DropBox, as well as working with Google Assistant, which is great, but it is slightly more expensive here in the UK (about £150 more). The Reolink website looks better and their app looks better, they just look more up to date in comparison to Swann, which you said their software is not user friendly and runs slowly, and I'm guessing their mobile app is the same too? If you had to choose one, and not worry about the price, which one would you AND all the other viewers here choose? Which is better and more reliable? Who has a better mobile app? Who has a better desktop app. In the Reolink contact us page, it seems to be from Hong Kong? Is that right? Or are they a Europe based company? I would really appreciate any help! Thank you.

Will who did you go with? I bought both the swann and reolink 4k systems in the black Friday deals, decided to send back the reolink because of the extra features of the swann with the PIR detection...but as I've not even set it up yet the thing that's starting to concern me about the swann is the recording frame rate.

Good video, I kinda do what you do , I rely on ring outside for my motion detection, while my hikvision records constantly and push notice is off. Rings outside do all my motion detection. Inside all my cameras have motion detection but also geofencing do when I come home they don’t send notifications. Also a few things, I notice your front door is not solid, I highly recommend a security gate. Also you can use your existing cat 5 cables to mount two ip cameras off one cable, there is a link to a guy showing a product of where he use one cable and had two up cameras. I will paste the link. Since I believe in having multiple cameras of different brands in case the nvr goes down. Keep up the good job.

These off the shelf systems really aren't that great. Also the motion detection is pixel based, not PIR. No amount of software tweak can help that. If the nvr has a connection for PIR sensors, that's the only way to get true detection without the false alarms. That or invest in better systems like dahua or hikvision which have advanced detection capability. Since you review a lot, you should invest in a good dahua nvr and 2mp starlight cameras which give superb night vision. With security cameras it's not really just about 4k. If you set yourself up with quality gear you'd yank all of your other stuff down. The difference image quality is that much better.

Il y a 8 mois

This model from Swann uses PIR sensors... look at the half dome sensor in the front of the camera. They advertise it as thermal sensing. The best and accurate motion detection is a combination of PIR and algorithm like what Ring use on their "wired" cameras. The video quality of the Swann is pretty good..it is just their software for the PC and their app.

The pc software for Swann is a weak point in my experience. It is a resource hog and I thought it was pretty clear they didn’t give it much thought. Your laptop is a core i7 with 16gb of RAM. That should be sufficient. I sadly feel the pc software is an afterthought for most surveillance systems. The NVR does seem to work well though.

@LifeHackster I just ran a few network cables to start setting up my system. The easiest way I found to do it is drill a small pilot hole in the soffit to make sure you're not drilling into something thick like a ceiling rafter. Then use an electrician's fiberglass "fish" rod, fed from below to make sure the route is clear. If so, drill a larger hole and then feed the fish into the attic as far as possible. That will keep you from having to crawl around on your stomach etc. Attach the network cable to the fish and pull back through from below. Anyhoo, thanks for all the great videos! I never would have attempted this if I hadn't found your channel. =)

Il y a 7 mois

I was planning to do that before...and probably I will in the near future. My suggestion to people that want to wire it in an attic with fiberglass insulation, just hire somebody to do it...this is the hardest part of the install of wired cameras.
